KQED listeners: where's Norm???

Any Bay Area people know what's wrong with Norm Howard? He's been away a long time (back a day here and there, then gone again), and I'm starting to worry about him! I realize I don't even know the man, but I'm really concerned! I miss hearing him in the mornings.

I noticed this last week too, but haven't been able to find anything about it... I was glad to hear the anchor who's filling in for him say that "he's getting better", but I miss him too!

By the way, Norm Howard has retired. I attended his retirement party last week. In the interim he had been using some vacation time and whatnot to take care of all the time that had accrued, so he was absent from the mic a lot.

It seems weird that no one ever mentioned it on air, but perhaps he didn't want to make a big fuss?? It just seems odd that he went away without so much as a "Norm has retired," esp. since they frequently (esp. during pledge) made mention of how long he had been with KQED. Anyway...huzzah to Norm! I miss him, though.

<It seems weird that no one ever mentioned it on air, but perhaps he didn't want to make a big fuss??>

I think that's exactly it. A lot of people leave broadcasting without saying much in the way of goodbyes. While radio people may seem like friends to you, they really don't know you. I think to make a big deal out of moving on is a bit strange, actually.

Tom Saunders retired from KOIT 2 years ago and his final goodbye after 40+ years at KYA and KOIT was to say at the end of his shift that he was leaving and to play a personalized jingle from his early days as a top 40 DJ. For most of us who've been in the business, that was just about right.

Gil Gross disappeared from ABC Radio News a few weeks back when he took the talkshow job at KGO. Not so much as a breath was lost in the transition.

There's a certain zen to doing this....
